I SWEAR TO GOD, I'M ACTUALLY GOING TO START AND FINISH ONE OF THESE
i had a lot of good things to talk about, but i'm probably just going to touch on the lightly, and then move on because i'm a horrible writer like that. no big successful novel for me.
i'm at will's house in philadelphia now. this house is huge. it has about five "half-stories" and looks all traditional and colonially. apparently they have a pool in the back, but i haven't seen that yet, despite being here for almost a week now.
on a side note, we got down here through two hours of darkness with only one headlight on the truck, as i noticed that the left one was out the day before when i took conrad to the airport in rochester. we accidentally took the wrong road which went down the wrong side of the river and it took us a good amount of time to go back the right way. but i found the headlight on the left side was out. also, hawkins threw a "wegmans cruelty" magnet on my hood. for those not knowing what wegmans is, it's like a giant olden safeway or albertsons, that is revered as a godly food source on the east coast.
well. will's family is nuclear.
will's mother, geralee is reserved. she doesn't seem like she's reserved because she's carefully considering the information, or doesn't like to participate in the conversation, but she is reserved in the manner that she tries to take in as much information as possible, comprehends it, and follows up somewhat. but when she does follow up, it seems to be in a broken manner. it's strange, because she's an english teacher (from what i could gather) and is quite bright.
will's father, billy, is really a nice guy. billy makes tv commercials, and is lighthearted, jovial, is not a man with much on his mind.
will's brother nate is different from the whole bunch. nate's 21, and lives at home, goes to college about 30 minutes away. in a lot of ways, he's very similar to me, but in other ways, he's more different from me than i could imagine. he's brash, confrontational, but is quite simple, a driven. i'm not sure if it's the fact that he's 21 and living at home or that he's naturally like this, but when his mom or dad asks him to do something, he mutters something mean under his breath and responds with a tone of annoyance. since will and i have been here he's done nothing but play video games. one day he spent entirely trying to beat one stage of "paper mario". he also curses violently. right now he's yelling at will with his mouth absolutely filled with... something. he also has one of those sucking laughs, the abnoxious kind. the puzzling thing is that he tries to please people, and at the same time is arrogant. in the short time we (will and i) have been here, he's picked up almost every inside joke we've joked about, and constantly demands attention from either myself or will. his arrogance is what really gets at me though. he acts as though he's already lived the rags to riches (mainly intellectual rags to riches) tale and thus anyone else can too.
we'll take tonight's dinner (thanksgiving) as an example. will and i were talking about how organic chemistry is the hell-spawn for just about every student on-floor and how his final was going to be curved 30 points or something. nate saw fit to interject that he got an A in organic chemistry, without any curve what-so-ever. about this point i had had enough of him going on about his chemistry knowledge etc, so i said, "well that must just mean that RIT students aren't as... apt as you are." i think everyone had been thinking around the same lines as i had as far as nate's arrogant tones, geralee laughed at this, everyone else smirked except nate, though i didn't quite expect him to.
i really would have liked to live and participate in court life. maybe it's the fact that i've gotten a lot of reading done in the style of such a life recently (dune: house harkonnen, house corrino) during the break. but it just seemed to be a much more noble time, there was a lot more honor in whateverone said and did.
oh, what i forgot to mention is that billy is the one that loaned me the dune books he had. everytime he comes home from work or something he asks me how that's going. it seems to amuse him quite a bit that every other time that he asks i told him i've finished a book. maybe that's a big reason why i like billy.
the other day i saw someone steal something. well, i can't say i saw him steal it, but i saw someone not pay for something. it was a blue gatorade. will nate and i were at a giardi's, a big grocery store, and we had gotten deli subs and i got a baguette and some cheese in addition. he was with two other guys, they were about my age, probably younger and stronger, making them look my age, but definately taller. they looked like they were from some prep school. assuming he did in fact steal that gatorade, he left his friends, walked around the cash register to the drinks, and then rejoined his friends in a careful way about where he walked as to not arouse attention, and hid (or if he didn't steal it, held) the gatorade in his sweatshirt pocket. he stood with his friends as they paid for their food, and then went to go sit down and eat.
i didn't call him on it, because i didn't see him steal. but if i had, would i have acted differently? was it my place to accuse him of stealing? would it have mattered in the long run? i know myself, i probably would not have called him on it even if i had seen him steal it, but would that make me a bad person? even though it would be petty theft at best, when is it wrong?
i feel bad ending it like this, but that's the way it is.
